John Blair was 30 years old when he took the shot that won him the 1978 Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Photography. Freelancing for United Press International, Blair was there at Crestwood Village for Kiritsis’ “Thursday Night News Conference,” and with his camera in hand, he captured the complicated display of desperation and taut purpose unfolding before him, even though it meant putting himself directly in the line of shotgun fire.
